As told by Charlie Balmer
When Josh was born with congenital CMV (cCMV), his prognosis was uncertain. Doctors told our family not to expect a long life, but Josh proved them all wrong. For 26 incredible years, he brought joy, strength and love to everyone around him. He faced each challenge with grace and his trademark big smile rarely left his face.
Josh was gentle, sweet and endlessly resilient. He taught us all so much about life, love, and perseverance. Sadly, we lost Josh in July 2024 after a short illness. His loss left a deep void in our family, but his spirit continues to inspire us every single day.
Honouring Josh’s Legacy
This year, myself, my girlfriend Fi and three close family friends (Beth, Jane and Amy) will be running the Great North Run in memory of Josh and to raise vital funds for CMV Action, the charity that supported our family throughout his life.
There’s a special significance to this challenge: ten years ago, my Mum and Dad, alongside Peter and Eileen (Beth, Jane and Amy’s parents), also ran the Great North Run for CMV Action. Following in their footsteps makes this even more meaningful for all of us. It feels like the right way to honour Josh’s memory and give back to the organisation that was there for us every step of the way.
Why CMV Action Matters
CMV Action plays a crucial role in supporting families affected by cCMV. While we wouldn’t change Josh for the world, we know how important it is to spread awareness of this little-known virus so other families can be better informed and supported.
Our family knows firsthand the difference this charity can make, from practical guidance to emotional support, CMV Action has always been a lifeline. We want to help ensure that support continues for others in the future.
The Journey So Far
Training for the Great North Run has already brought some memorable moments. One of our team, Beth, has a 10-month-old baby, Cooper. Watching her and her partner head out for training runs with Cooper in the pushchair has been both adorable and inspiring. It’s no small task running with a baby in tow, but they do it with such joy and commitment.
Why the Great North Run?
The Great North Run is the biggest half marathon in the world and it takes place in the North East, where my parents are from. It feels fitting to run this race in Josh’s honour, in a place that holds so much family history. With thousands of runners and spectators, it’s also the perfect opportunity to raise awareness of cCMV and the incredible work of CMV Action.
The Great North Run will take place on Sunday 7th September. Please click the link below to donate and leave a message of support for Charlie and his team.
