Sam – Why I’m battling to raise funds and awareness for CMV Action
A Life-Changing Diagnosis at Four Days Old
When our daughter Millie-Rose was born, everything seemed perfect. But at just four days old, she was diagnosed with CMV (cytomegalovirus). During pregnancy, my partner had been told she had CMV, but doctors couldn’t say for certain whether Millie would also have it until she was born and tested.
Living with CMV: A Journey of Uncertainty
CMV has completely reshaped our lives. Since Millie’s diagnosis, we’ve had far more hospital appointments than any new parent typically expects. Even though Millie is hitting her targets, she’s still slower than the average 19-month-old. However, looking at her, you’d never guess she has this virus—she’s the most beautiful, perfect little girl. At the moment, the virus mainly affects her speech and hearing, but we remain hopeful for the future, despite the uncertainties.
Finding Strength Through Boxing
Earlier this year, I took on boxing as a way to make a difference. In April, I participated in my first charity boxing match, raising £300 for men’s mental health, another cause that’s very important to me. The training and knowing I was helping others brought me a lot of joy. After that, I decided to see if there was a charity specifically supporting families affected by CMV. That’s when I found CMV Action, and I instantly knew I had to do it.
Raising Awareness and Funds for CMV Action
I haven’t got a set target in mind, I just want to raise as much as possible especially because CMV Action is a small charity who don’t receive any government funding. Many people haven’t heard of CMV until it affects them. I never knew it existed until it affected my family so I want play my part in changing that.
