Paul’s Story
Like many people, I hadn’t heard of CMV (Cytomegalovirus) until it affected me and my family. When it did, I knew I had to do something to change that. Now, I’m committed to raising as much awareness and money as I can for this great cause by taking part in the 2025 TCS London Marathon.
The Impact of CMV
When my son John was born, everything seemed perfect. He failed a hearing test, but we were told it was probably just fluid and would come out. Since he was a lockdown baby, all services were closed, and there was no follow-up—this would end up being the start of many battles.
Months turned into years, and we finally got a diagnosis: CMV and Autism. John is non-verbal, and this has completely reshaped our lives. We’ve had countless hospital appointments, and just last year (2024), John had to be put to sleep twice for ongoing tests. CMV has caused John to be profoundly deaf in his left ear, and we’re still monitoring his right ear with regular appointments.
Despite all of the uncertainties, we remain hopeful for the future.
Why a marathon?
I decided to take on the challenge of running a marathon to raise funds and awareness for CMV Action because I believe it’s a fantastic way to spread the word about this cause. Not only is it an incredible event, but it’s also one of the best ways to raise both awareness and funds. It gives me the opportunity to share my message while also getting fit, and there’s such a great feeling after each run.
One of the most memorable moments so far in my fundraising journey has been the support I’ve received from people I haven’t seen or spoken to in a while. It’s been amazing to see so many people come forward with donations and well-wishes. It’s been incredibly humbling, and I’m hoping that support continues right up until the marathon.
Raising funds for CMV Action
CMV Action’s work is so important because they are the only charity in the UK working to help people understand what CMV is, the risks involved, and the long-term effects it can have.
The more we can educate, the more we can fight it and make a real difference.
