Running for Awareness: Abby’s Journey to Support CMV Action at the London Landmarks Half Marathon

By March 24, 2025No Comments

Inspiring Change Through Action

In 2024, I had the opportunity to raise funds for CMV Action by sharing my family’s story. It was a powerful experience, and I knew I wanted to continue supporting this incredible charity. So when the chance to run the London Landmarks Half Marathon came up, I knew I couldn’t turn it down!

I’ve been supported by CMV Action for the last five years, and I want to give something back

How CMV Has Affected My Family

My daughter Betsy was born with congenital CMV (cCMV) in 2019. My pregnancy was complicated, and she arrived early at 33 weeks, weighing just 3lb 2oz. As a midwife at the time, I was embarrassed to admit that I had never heard of this disease, and it came as a total shock to both my husband and me. Unfortunately, cCMV caused hearing loss in my daughter’s left ear, and we continue to monitor her closely for any other potential effects.

It’s been a difficult journey, but we are determined to stay strong and raise awareness about this condition.

Why I Chose This Challenge

Whilst I’m not a natural runner, I’ve always dreamed of running the London Marathon just once in my lifetime. When the opportunity to take on the London Landmarks Half Marathon came up, I saw it as the perfect way to kickstart my running journey. Who knows if I’ll ever complete a full marathon, but I’m a step closer to that goal than I was six months ago!

Most importantly, I’ve been supported by CMV Action for the last five years, and I want to give something back. By running, I hope to raise awareness and make sure that more people understand the dangers of CMV during pregnancy. If my efforts can help just one more person learn about this disease, I’ll be incredibly proud.

A Memorable Challenge

I suffer with Long COVID, so from the start, I didn’t know if this challenge would be feasible or not. From the start, I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to complete the race. I began my training slowly by using the ‘Couch to 5K’ app, slowly building up my distance. Fortunately, my long COVID symptoms have been manageable, and I’ve been able to continue training—until I developed ITBS (Iliotibial Band Syndrome), which forced me to take a break. It’s been frustrating, but I’m hoping that with some adjustments, I’ll be able to keep going and cross the finish line on April 6th, even if it’s at a slower pace.

The Importance of Awareness

CMV Action has been an incredible support to my family and countless others affected by the CMV virus. The more people learn about CMV, especially healthcare professionals, the better. The funds raised for CMV Action are vital in spreading awareness and ultimately reducing the number of children born with the virus.

I’m running for my daughter, for families like mine, and for everyone who’s been impacted by cCMV.
