Rubie May almost died because of common virus - now Fairfield family is raising awareness

It's a virus you can’t see, with no obvious symptoms yet little Rubie May Lofthouse is living proof of the damage it can do.

Born prematurely by emergency caesarean section weighing just 3lb 4oz, Rubie’s parents, Sophie Lofthouse and Colin Hope could only watch as their newborn baby was rushed to intensive care.

The Stockton mum’s pregnancy had seemed normal and healthy, except for what she thought was a cold, until a month before her due date when the baby stopped growing.

Sophie, 22, of Fairfield, said: “I hadn’t even heard of CMV until Rubie May was born. She was born four weeks early because she wasn’t growing.
