A heartbreaking story ...

A DEVASTATED mum has spoken of the ‘agony’ of giving birth to her stillborn baby after he was infected with a deadly virus.

Jordan Scott’s son, Alfie, was given just a five per cent chance of survival after doctors found the CMV virus had spread to his brain.

She and partner Jack Laidler made the ‘agonising’ call for medics to give Alfie an injection to stop his tiny heart on Friday.

And Miss Scott, 24, gave birth to her son in the early hours on Monday after being induced on Sunday afternoon.

Now the Uttoxeter couple want to raise awareness of CMV.

Miss Scott said she and Mr Laidler had had to think carefully about their existing children, four-year-old Hollie-Mai Laidler and eight-month-old Sophia Morton-Scott, before making their ‘heartbreaking’ decision.

She said: “I know the joy of bringing your baby home and to think I wouldn’t be able to do that with Alfie has been heart-breaking since we were told about the virus two weeks ago.

“I just cried and cried. Jack was somehow able to take all the information in but I was too upset to even think as soon as I heard the words ‘five per cent chance’.

“We’ve got two daughters and we had to think about them and how they would cope with seeing Alfie hopelessly struggling to stay alive – if he was born at all.

“I could barely bring myself to get out of bed on Friday for the appointment to stop my baby’s heart.

“Now we want to ensure no-one else has to go through the same thing we have by raising money and awareness to highlight the dangers of CMV.”

Alfie’s mum and dad have set up a charity page to give to CMV Action online at www.virginmoneygiving.com/team/Alfiessoldiers

CMV, or cytomegalovirus, infects 900 babies in the UK every year while they are still in the womb.

Miss Scott said: “It’s something that affects more babies than Down’s Syndrome, but no-one’s really ever heard of it.
